Florida Technical College - Medical Assistant TechnicianThe Medical Assistant Technician diploma is a short term program designed to prepare students to seek an entry level position in the health care profession.

Occupation Outlook

Medical Assistant is projected to be the fastest growing occupation over the 2002 – 2012 period, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupation Outlook Handbook. As the health care services industry continues to expand because of technological advances in medicine and a growing and aging population, the need for qualified medical assistants will continue to grow.

Training Objectives

Students in the Medical Assistant Technician diploma program will acquire their knowledge and competency for this profession through clinical and administrative class work and supervised clinical practice in an externship.

In the classroom, students will be introduced to a number of vital, important health care skills. Students will study Medical Terminology, Cardiology, Surgical Procedures, Pharmacology, Lab Procedures, and Clinical Procedures.

Students will also be exposed to actual on-site training in the externship component. Students will work at a clinical site. Students will have responsibility for clerical functions, venipuncture, collection of specimens, assistance with office exams, basic first aid and bandaging, charting patients, taking vital signs, billing and other office duties.

Florida Technical College has affiliation agreements with local area physicians to lay the foundation for a partnership to reinforce clinical and administrative competencies, to foster professional attitudes, to maximize problem solving skills and to encourage open communication on all levels. FTC uses an Advisory Board Committee composed on a physician, a registered nurse, a licensed practical nurse and a registered medical assistant. Students will study course work in a dedicated lab designed and equipped to provide training in medical assisting.
